Cleo started out as a family-owned corporation almost fifty years ago in Memphis, Tennessee, the birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll - and America's Distribution Center. Originally operating under the name of Memphis Converting Company, Cleo has gone through a number of changes through the years, all the while building a reputation as the pre-eminent provider of gift wrapping products for the mass market.
The Sixties
The company (now Cleo Inc) was sold to CIT Financial Corporation. During its period, Cleo introduced a number of new products, including multi-roll boxes, color printed freezer paper, and the Jumbo Roll.
The Seventies
At this time, we merged with Gibson Greetings. New products included juvenile Valentine cards, gift boxes, and reversible gift wrap.
The Eighties
The eighties saw Gibson/Cleo being sold to Wesray Corporation, and the first public sale of our stock. A major innovation of this period was our decision to lead the industry by converting our printing processes from organic solvent-based inks to water-based inks.
The Nineties and Beyond
In 1995, we were acquired by
CSS Industries - proud to take our place in a family of affiliate companies that lead the world in providing a full range of items for the seasonal products industries.
